Monitor Blue Ocean a MEMS Pressure Sensor will Continuously Help Medical Electronics Field

With the progress of science and technology and the development of society, the application of sensors in the field of medical health has been greatly popularized. At the same time, due to the importance of accurate monitoring, diagnosis and treatment, modern medical equipment on the sensor technology specifications and market regulations are becoming higher and higher, more and more fine, resulting in a wide range of sensor types and different uses, only according to the detection type. It can be divided into pressure sensor, displacement sensor, flow sensor, temperature sensor, speed sensor, image sensor, flow sensor and so on.

The so-called pressure sensor is a device  that can feel the pressure signal and convert the pressure signal into an available and output electrical signal according to a certain law, usually composed of a pressure sensitive element and a signal processing unit. At present, pressure sensors have significantly improved in the medical industry applications, such as accuracy, reliability, stability, volume and other parameters than in the past have made breakthroughs, and play a key role in breathing instruments, infusion pumps, pressure pumps, diagnostic instruments and a variety of monitors, boosting the process of medical digitization.

Semiconductor technology continues to play an important role in the development of new technologies that enable portability, patient monitoring, diagnostics and therapies. Breakthroughs in MEMS sensor technology have also brought unprecedented convenience and experience to medical applications.

According to MEMS marketing, the MEMS pressure sensor operating revenue in medical electronics this year is expected to grow by 7%, benefiting from the use of disposable instruments and medical monitoring. The pressure sensor operating revenue in the medical electronic application sector will reach $137.6 million this year, up from $129.2 million in 2011. It is expected to maintain steady growth in the coming years and is expected to reach us $186.7 million by 2016.

Although medical MEMS pressure sensor in the field of electronic business income or consumption field is relatively small compared with cars, but medical electronic belong to the category of the so-called high value, much higher average selling prices higher than other MEMS field. In addition to medical electronics, the high value of MEMS pressure sensor applications include industrial and military/aerospace, high total value to the other half in the field of MEMS, the high value of MEMS revenue this year to an estimated $283.6 million.

This year pressure sensors will become the main MEMS device type, with revenue expected to reach $1.5 billion. For medical applications, MEMS pressure sensor technology requires the production of specialized techniques for precise low-pressure measurement devices for intrusive or non-invasive applications. Pressure sensors for invasive applications, such as monitoring blood pressure, are low-cost consumables. In contrast, non-invasive pressure sensors used to monitor sleep disorders can be reused and cost much more.

Inertial sensors are the basis of many activity monitors. Inertial sensors are designed to detect force shifts from motion, tilt, positioning, shock and vibration. Activity monitors and free-fall detectors require rapid response, high sensitivity, low current consumption, low-voltage operation and standby mode in a small package. It can be used to detect falls caused by physical abnormalities in patients. For example, if blood sugar levels are too low, the patient may lose consciousness and faint. Inertial sensors can be used to detect people's fall behavior. The output signal from the sensor can be used to activate an alarm or to issue an alarm via wireless communication.
